In the centre of the face of the metronome are two arrows - up and down. In contrast to traditional metronomes, it moves the tempo up or down in increments of one. Lower down are two white buttons that turn on the sound and alter the time signature. The only quibble is that the sounds are a little irritating after a while. If you don't mind the QT-5's rather piercing tone, it would be an excellent metronome to slip into a gig bag or pocket. Around £15. 3 out of 5

The Qwiktime QT-5 is a simple to use, 8mm thick, credit card-sized unit with an extendible stand at the back for placing on an amplifier or other flat surface. The LCD display is very clear with a digital readout indicating the tempo in beats-per-minute (bpm), time signature and beat. Its one quirk is that its display is permanently on, with a bouncing ball that indicated the beats of three different time signatures (4/4, 3/4 or 2/4).
