There has been many great musicians in the past so here is where you can post which bands or musicians in your opinion helped change music and how, why, or what they changed about the music industry.

The Rock Genre came before many other genres in music and Black Sabbath was a huge influence to Rock and they practically created Heavy Metal in the 70's and 80's which lead to many other changes in Rock. Without Black Sabbath, there is no saying if there would have been a Metallica or any other metal band that used Black Sabbath's metal sound.

Jimi Hendrix was a huge tribute to Rock also and I don't think that I even have to give an explination on him.

---what is everyone elses opinions?

I personally feel that Dave Matthews Band has helped a great deal in influencing the music genre. I mostly feel this way, because the majority of big bands around the time that DMB started up were rather cookie-cutter, with only a few truely and utterly unique setups among them. Since DMB started up, it seems there have been a few more bands that have been braver in losing the usual set-up and extending their ideas and influence out into the world. That and who doesn't love a rhythm player that can out-do some lead guitarists.

My friend agrees on Black Sabbath being one of the most influential bands as well. I agree too, its just not my style of music.

I also think BB King, simply because he helped to make blues a bit more mainstream and more acceptable among people.

Nirvana started the grunge era, drawing their influences from bands like the meat puppets and the pixies

The Postal Service is a bigger band name that uses synths and electric backbeats, i'm not sure that they started anything but they make a great face to look at for the genre... i have seen many bands draw towards synths [Headphones (essentially a new name for the band Pedro the Lion) and Thom Yorke (his new album turns Radiohead into synth nostalgia] anyways, i think they're more influential than other bands of the same genre because they seem to have made it work

Pearl Jam, when almost every band was playing flawless produced albums, Pearl Jam broke out with their album 'Ten' which mainly sounded like it was a live album full of energy, grunge-like straight rock, and I don't know... but Pearl Jam definetely did something to change the music world

I feel the band Wolfmother could be the next band to change something, with their classic rock feel and riffy guitar work... it may just be speculation but they could do something for music

I agree, I think Wolfmother could very well do something great. They are very new, all they have to do is keep going and making music and they could go down in history.

I think The Beatles changed rock music forever. I mean, who hasnt heard of the Beatles? I also think Pink Floyd is one of the most influencial bands ever.

I would have to say that U2 has definitely helped shape the pop rock genre in the early '90s. Their music is always cool and popular but not necessarily pointless. Bono and his group's music is always relevant and explosive. They have an impressive string of hits and their longevity shows that popular bands doesn't always have to go through the drama of break ups and bad fallouts. I think this is best explained by their genuine and solid friendship and brotherhood, as exemplified by their classic song, "One". And if I failed to mention, their creativity and musicality is just phenomenal.

Now in the case of individual artists, I'll always consider Jimi Hendrix as the greatest musician that has ever lived. He was just an art in himself. He?s the kind of musician that will make you dream to be a rockstar yourself. Hendrix is a god in human form.

Also, Greenday. They ruined it all.

Bob Dylan for one. I bet everyone has been either directly or indirectly been inspired by him., Dave Matthews helped bring popularity to a genre that had been lost from "new popular music". I'd like to think Eddie Vedder would be there too. His lyrics really influence, songs flow, and the whole finished song with the guitars/bass/drum just... Go together.
