Polychords

What are they:
Polychords are when two guitarists play two different chords simultaneously to produce a new chord.

This forms a collection of notes that can be arranged into at least two triads or a seventh chord. A triad being a chord that usually contains the root, a third and a fifth interval. You can read more about triads here.

For example, combining an Am triad (A C E) with a C triad (C E G) forms an Am7 chord (A C E G).

There are literally thousands of combinations to try out, but here are some more examples to give you an idea what is achievable! (Note that the C chords are based around the 8th fret)

Example 1. C + Am = Am7
