Chromatic Tuners? 2 Years, 5 Months ago Karma: 0
I have an electric guitar and tuner but I saw a program on TV recently (the shopping channel - I know, I know!) where a guy was talking about a chromatic tuner where you could tune all 6 strings to be in perfect tune for all 12 notes.

It sounded far-fetched but before I visit eBay I was wondering if someone could tell me if they think it is a good idea to get one and if so, what does it really do? Will it help me play better?

By the way, I am a novice guitar player of just 3 months experience so far.

Thanks,

Jonathan.

All you really need is a decent chromatic tuner. I suggest grabbing a Korg. They should only be 20-30 USD at any of your local music stores.

All you need is a tuner than can tune the string to the note you need. Whether or not all of the notes along the next are perfectly in tune is up to the intonation of your guitar, not the tuner you use.

Hi John (and MakoMako, long time no speak hey?!)

Glad to have you on board! As MakoMako said, your guitars intonation is the determining factor of having the whole neck in tune. If you get a cheap chromatic tuner, you can set this up quite easily. There should be a lesson about intonation on the site somewhere. But to be honest, you dont really need pinpoint accurate intonation this early on in your guitar playing life, just getting the stings to be in tune with each other at the open strings will be good enough for the chords you play and such.

Hope we've helped, if not post back here!
