Hey,
Women should be able to do and get involved in any aspect of life that they wish, but I'm not naive enough to believe it's that easy. It's still tough to be a women in what can stil be a man's world, particularly as far as the rock music industry is concerned. Easy enough for us in the pop world, but not so much as far as rock is concerned. No doubt that when the band I'm in played our last gig (we're a rock/pop covers band), some audience members (one creepy one in particular!) still eyed a female guitarist as somewhat of a curiosity! On the plus side, as I'm 'just a girl' (to quote the lovely Gwen Stefani!) less seems to be expected of me as a guitarist - I get more 'well dones' from spectators! Having said all that, I'm in a band with 4 guys and none of them blink an eye that I'm a girl with a guitar, they treat me as a complete equal and expect as much from me as everyone else - I even have to carry my own gear, proving equality is not all it's cracked up to be ;-)
I shall be starting a column on this very site very soon and it's kind of going to promote the girls of rock and be from a female's perspective...so watch this space!
