Hard question. Are we talking current, or do you wanna do further back to some more vintage stuff. As far as the older stuff goes, even Yamaha acoustics were exceptional way back when, despite how they are now. Martin guitars were alot better years ago as well, as were Gibson.
But, if you want to just talk about which brand of acoustic you feel is currently on top. I'm going to have to go with Martin. I would have agreed with you on Taylor up until yesterday. I went out to buy some strings at the local, small-time guitar shop. The guy there recognized me and started pulling off some mid to high-end Martins off the wall and handing them to me. My mind was blown at how well they played compared to the Taylors at the other store.
So, for now... Martin

to my ears, taylor seems the best
i can leave guitar strings (elixers) on for 8 months before they sound dead and it has a deep, full tone with loud volume. i can't imagine a better guitar for the price

I agree for the price, quality & customer service Taylor. Now giving a little more money....Martin, Collings, Santa Cruz, Olson, Petros, oh mercy so many guitars and so little time.
Here's good example of customer service, my Taylor 714ce expression system died. No one in my area could service it. A company in Orlando is a service center for Taylor. Well my sister lives there so it's a good excuse to go for a visit.
I dropped it off saturday morn. They told me to come back after lunch. I return and they have replaced the entire ES! The tech says, Well the only problem is when I called it into Taylor they could not find my registration. I told him that's because I'm not the original owner.
He says hold on I'll be right back. I was well prepared to pay whatever it would cost because this is one of my favorites.
After a few moments he returns and says, hey no problem Taylor wants to cover it for you!
Now I can't say that happens to everyone, but man thats customer service ain't it!

There are many good ones out there. Its between Taylor, Martin, and Gibson for acoustic guitars, but like i said, there are still others out there that might be just as good in someone elses opinion.

I'll have to go with Martin. Of course I own 2 Martins, so I have a bias. I did do a lot of comparisons before I bought, though, and it was less than a year ago when I bought them. Local shops have a lot of Taylors and Martins. They also have some Breedloves. Personally, I preferred the Breedloves to the Taylors. Now, I get together with some friends and one of them has a Taylor that is absolutely fantastic, so I know there are Taylors out there that would appeal to me.
The sound of a guitar, and its appeal to the listener is a very personal thing, so I don't think there is such a thing as a best brand. Both Martin and Taylor have high quality standaeds and make exceptional instruments. I would love to try a Collings, as I have heard nothing but praise for these guitars from both Martin and Taylor owners. However, thry are expensive.
I will still cast my vote for Martin. I love the rumble in my gut that the bass of my HD-28 generates when I'm holding it.
